Since opening in the fall of 2011, the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility has supported the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s Dakota tradition of caring for the earth. Over the years, the facility has implemented new products and processes to better serve the Community and our neighbors. With the start of the new year, we have a few new updates and changes to our current offerings.
Expanded Spring Hours
Our current hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-3pm. Starting in April, our hours will change to Monday-Thursday, 7am-7pm; Friday, 7am-5pm; and Saturday, 8am-2pm. The SMSC Organics Recycling Facility will remain closed on Sunday. By extending our hours, we hope to better serve the community and meet the needs of our clients.
New Mulch Products
This spring, the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility will be adding three new mulch products to our current lineup: black mulch, western red cedar mulch, and American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM)-certified playground mulch called precision play. These new additions will add to our already established mulch products—natural mulch, dark brown mulch, gold mulch, and red mulch. Whether you’re looking for colored mulch to add curb appeal, or seeking a natural garden blend to help your plants grow, the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility provides high-quality products for your outdoor projects and landscaping.
Launching a New Recycling Program
As a tribe committed to being a good neighbor, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community partners with local municipalities to offer programs to its residents. The SMSC Organics Recycling Facility has hosted numerous free organics drop-off programs throughout the years. This spring, the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility—in partnership with Scott County—will be launching a free residential food waste drop-off program for Scott County residents. Check back for more details in the weeks to come. These programs help to divert materials that may have been tossed in a landfill and instead create compost, compost blends, colored mulch, and more.
