As the ground begins to thaw and the temperature starts to rise, it’s time to start planning your summer home improvement projects and there’s no better way to increase the curb appeal of your house than to add a vibrant mulch to your landscaping. Here at the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility, our high-quality organic mulch is available in four stunning colors: dark brown, red, gold, and natural to complement any yard.
We take pride in our products and the process it takes to create them. But how exactly do we make these beautiful mulches, you ask? For starters, we gather our wood from off-site grinding sites and municipal wood sites that residents use to drop off brush and wood waste. Once these sites get full, our mobile grinding operation grinds the wood at these sites and hauls it back to the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility for the next step in our process. After arriving back at the facility, the wood is put through a screener, which helps remove any excess dirt and wood fines.
Once the wood has been screened, it’s put through a grinder once again to produce our double-ground, high-quality natural mulch. Grinding the wood twice is an essential point in our process as it ensures that we are compliant with emerald ash borer (EAB) regulations. When we grind the wood to this size, we remove the possibility of survival of EAB larvae, an invasive species that feed on the innermost bark of ash trees.
After the wood has been prepped with screening and grinding, the fun part can begin—coloring the mulch! Our EDGE TRC622 Colour Trommel became the MVP of our facility upon traveling all the way from Ireland back in spring of 2018. Located within the colorizer is a large spinning drum called the trommel drum. This drum is where wood, water, and dye tumble together to make our vibrant mulches. The biodegradable and nontoxic mulch dye that we use on our products arrives at our facility in large 300-gallon totes. With the help of a front-end loader, wood is dumped into the top of our colorizer and then water and dye are injected into the machine to start the coloring magic. After the mulch has been evenly coated with dye in the drum, a conveyor transports the dyed mulch out of the machine and stacks it in a large pile to dry. Here, the mulch will sit for 48-72 hours before it is ready for customers to purchase.
